This hasn’t been a good year for musicians so far. First Ron Asheton, guitarist for The Stooges went. Then it was the drummer from Nekromantix, Andy DeMize. Now Lux Interior, the frontman for The Cramps – the first to fuse rockabilly, punk rock, and b horror movie elements, founding the psychobilly subgenre and subculture – has died. I had no idea about it until my sister mentioned it tonight before she went to bed.

R.I.P. Lux Interior (October 21, 1946 – February 4, 2009)

Not only are The Cramps one of my favorite bands, Lux’s wife Poison Ivy has been a huge musical inspiration for me back when I actually had time to play guitar. The thing I like the most about The Cramps is how they’re so sleazy and simultaneously come off as very pro-feminist thanks to Lux’s shameless cross-dressing and the fact that half the band consisted of female musicians. Any girl who goes onstage in a glittery bikini and high heels and creates some of the most memorable licks in rock ‘n’ roll on a Gretsch is a hero of mine.

And to all those crazy people out there who think zombies are going to spring out from their graves one day, if it’s going to happen, it’ll be Lux, so just wait and see. ;)
