More art stuff

Well, the scoring on Threadless has finally ended and my design came out with a 1.95 out of 5. Not bad considering I did nearly the entire thing in less than one day, not to mention that it’s not exactly what I’d call finished. I still did better than everyone I’ve heard from in the Intro to Design classes and 525 people felt strongly enough about my design to vote for it one way or another, which is good enough for me. Here are some of my favorite comments it received:

“Gave it a 5 for being the most mehtul thing on this site.”

“There’s something bad-ass yet My Little Pony about this drawing.”

I actually considered putting a lightning bolt or a rune on the horse’s butt. :P

I also just realized that I keep forgetting to post the drawings from some of my finished work, so here’s the original drawing I used for the t-shirt design as well as the one for the print of Odin’s ravens I did last fall:





I’m currently working on my series for my Advanced Drawing Strategies class. We have to do 12-15 themed drawings outside of class this semester, and mine is on Baldrs Draumar (Baldr’s Dreams) and Dauði Baldrs (Baldr’s Death). I was originally planning on giving the Norse mythology a break and doing the series on the Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley) from Irish mythology. But after rereading it with an outsider’s perspective in mind, I thought it might be a little to obscure for my class. At least with Baldr, I can explain that he’s Odin and Frigga’s son and Thor’s half brother, and people will instantly get a sense of who he is thanks to Marvel Comics. The whole story of Baldr’s death is also fairly easy to relate to. I’m saving Ragnarök for my Advanced Painting BFA Exhibition series, so I figured why not use the event that leads up to that point for this series. I don’t have any of these drawings finished yet, but once I do, I’ll be sure to post them.

And in some way related: I always have a bit of trouble with the whole mythology vs Marvel thing. I love Thor comics but I obviously don't see them like I see the Eddas or whatever, hah! The comics don't have anything spiritual about them, but then again, they're about the same characters.. Still feels weird somehow. Don't really know how to explain, lol =P

Don't worry, I know what you mean! I haven't read much of the comics, but I've seen character profiles online and summaries of some of the stuff that happens. It seems like they take the stories from the Eddas and change them a bit to add more drama. A lot of the lessons that are supposed to be learned about human nature from the myths get lost when this happens. Some of Marvel's interpretations of the characters are also a little odd, especially with their crazy outfits, horns, and whatnot. I'm just glad there's something in pop culture that people who don't know much about Norse mythology can relate to.

That's also an awesome idea, I love series and things that relate to each other, sort of a story through illustrations. :), I hope see more of your artwork! Also I love the finished valkyrie :), the shading is wonderful.

Thanks! Only 0.05 away from a 2! *shakes fist* Oh well.

That's actually exactly what my series is going to be. Some of the drawings are illuminated manuscript-type pages that help narrate the story because there's a lot that happens.

I wish I had time to put in the shading on the horse and shield, but I wasn't going to pull an all-nighter and trace each of those lines with the pen tool. :P

Aww, thanks! When I get some free time (probably over the summer at the rate I'm going) I'll submit some more mythology-related designs and maybe I'll eventually get one printed. I could still pay to get it screen printed on a shirt someplace or set up my own guerrilla-style screen printing studio at home, but I don't like the design enough to go through with any of that.

Thanks again! The Ragnarök series will be here in the fall of 2011, granted I still want to do that for my exhibition series. I probably will though because I can't think of anything more epic than that! ;)
