And here I thought I was healthy!
From 4:00 to 5:30 AM, I had the worst heartburn pain of my life. My back, arms, and jaw went numb and I had trouble breathing. I took a Pepcid AC, but I didn’t realize it had to be chewed or dissolved and I ended up swallowing it. Regardless, it didn’t do anything.
This freaked me out because before my dad got on medication for acid reflux, he had the same symptoms but would sometimes stop breathing at night. What I don’t understand is why this is showing up now. I rarely ever got heartburn in the past, even after eating meals with plenty of garlic, onions, and marinara. The only things I can think of to blame are drinking peach mango juice at 2:00 AM on an empty stomach, the cookies my mom made from lemon cake mix that I hadn’t had in years, and over-exerting myself a bit that day in yoga. Everything else I eat at the dorms is rather bland and doesn’t contain any meat or dairy. I know stress can cause heartburn, but I’m not all that stressed out right now.
A few hours ago, the stabbing pain came back, but it went away after a few seconds. Now that I have eaten dinner, the heartburn has returned, but is not overly painful, so I took a Tagamet. Honestly, it’s not doing much either. I just hope this doesn’t get bad tonight because I have to be up early tomorrow and have a very physically and mentally grueling day ahead of me.
I talked to a doctor at my clinic on the phone, and he said I should’ve gone to the hospital. If it happens again, I’ll have to call my mom to pick me up so she can drive me the half hour to the hospital covered under our insurance, even though there’s a hospital across the street from the dorms. Even if it doesn’t, I still have to see a doctor this weekend because it may not just be gastrointestinal-related. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious and I can just take a prescription and find out if something I ate is causing it.
